Nintendo DSi Consoles

There are actually so many features which have changed in some way that I will probably forget to mention some of them here.

The white and black DSi is certainly the most dramatic update of the console so far. It has had far more alterations, some obvious such as the cameras and some more subtle such positioning of the power control but each change has been well thought through to make the console as perfect as possible. While the DS Lite was mostly a well needed cosmetic upgrade (the original DS did look quite ugly), the newest version adds entirely new ways in which the console can be used.

Nintendo DSi consoles were released on the first of December in Japan and is expected to be released throughout Europe some time in spring 2009. One of the first things you notice is that the casing has a grain matte finish to it as opposed to the Lite which had a shiny glossy finish. This is a little controversial as many people prefer shiny things. However I think the matte finish is classier. You could say it makes the console less likely to slip out of your hands, but I’ve never met anyone that complains about that happening with the DS Lite.

Order before they sell out.

Black DSi

The first of the two colors of Nintendo DSi consoles that will be available from launch, is the black DSi. Black is always a popular color for technology. Large items like TVs down to small items like black DSi seem to alternate between being produced mainly in black one year, to mainly in white the next year. Nintendo are covering both ends with a black DSi as well as a white DSi.

The new system is lighter than the Lite edition (maybe they should have called the DS Lite the “DS Fairly Lite”, to allow room for improvement). Despite this, it is actually longer and wide but thinner (so if you lay it flat on a desk it will not stick up as high but it is longer in the other dimensions).

Blue DSi

Most of the world have a choice between white and black DSi on its release. In the USA we have been given the blue DSi instead of the white one. It seems odd that America has not got the same colors as everywhere else but we are pleased that we get a cooler looking color.

If you want to make people in Europe jealous, you'd probably e best to buy blue DSi instead of the other colors. The fact that they can't have it makes it even more desirable.

White DSi

Update: The white DSi isn't currently available in the US, but we got a better deal as we're getting the blue DSi instead.

The second color that the Nintendo DSi Console will be available in is white. The white DSi is likely to be a very popular choice at first. One reason why the white DSi is likely to be so popular is simply that there is only one alternative. That alternative is the black DSi. Black is a color that a lot of people dislike so they could be happier with a white DSi.

Green DSi

Again the green DSi is not available in the US. It doesn't look as cool as the blue DSi anyway so I don't think many people mind too much. It is likely that it will be released in the future in this country but for now most people will be happy with a black or blue one. The green DSi is currently only available in Japan, but at least we got the blue version first.

The Nintendo DSi won’t be a complete remodel if it weren’t for its design. There are many notable new additions to the design of the console. The new design now (in all colors as well as the green DSi) has an additional camera, bigger screen, relocation of the power button, slimmer design, and matte finish. All of the aforementioned new features would always have a greater experience from playing games to playing multimedia.

The L and R buttons now stick out slightly more than on previous versions. This makes them a little easier to press. Conversely the D-pad sticks out less than in the DS Lite meaning you don’t need to press as hard which gives it a nice feel.

Where the power slider was located previously you’ll now find the SD slot. This is used for storing your digital photos taken on the White DSi as well as for ACC music files. Unfortunately Nintendo have opted not to allow MP3 music files, making Nintendo DSi consoles somewhat less desirable as a portable music player to many. The flash memory is also used for storing software which is downloaded from the new Nintendo DSi shop.

The power slider has been replaced with a button is now inside the console next to the lower left hand side of the bottom screen. This is well away from where finger would likely go during gameplay and is quite stiff so you are unlikely to turn the console off by mistake. If you press the power button quickly it will take you to the main menu. If you hold it down for a few seconds you will turn the console off.

Nintendo DSi XL

It might not seem like a long time since Nintendo released their last handheld console, but they already have a successor taking Japan the world by storm. The DSi XL does not add many features to the console other than including two braining training games but it has one very important feature. This one feature can make the upgrade worthwhile to some people. The Nintendo DSi XL increases the size of the screen by a massive amount. While the DSi improved the screen size by around 12%, these consoles increase that size by another 90%! When people see the DSi XL console for the first time, their immediate reaction tends to be “wow”.

Pictures don’t really tell the full story. You need to see a DSi XL in action to really appreciate how large they are. There was a plan to release a DS Lite XL at one time. It would have been a little smaller than the version they did release and would not have included the extra features found in the current model.

Pink Nintendo DSi

There is no Pink DSi available yet, but so you should probably buy a blue DSi because they look nice too.

One of the most successful variations of the DS has been the pink Nintendo DS Lite consle. Pink has traditionally been a color avoided by games designers as it is supposedly off putting for the core audience of male gamers. However Nintendo have made a bold move of designing a pink Nintendo DSi consoles in an effort to attract more females gamers. Along with this they have had a noticeably female targeted marketing campaign and released several games designed for younger females such as Nintendogs. The Nintendo DS pink has been so successful it was followed up by a Pink Nintendo DS Lite and that is going to be followed by a pink DSi.
